If you have experienced the benefit of attending rehab, you know how challenging it can be to break free of addiction.

Millions of people are battling an addiction, and what they all have in common is their inability to quit using. Of course, that is the nature of any harmful addiction. Congratulations on having made it through rehab. Now you and millions of other people are facing re-entry into mainstream society once again. It’s frightening to say the least. You’re not alone! There are a number of things you can do as a recovering addict to stay sober in South Dakota.

1. Find an aftercare program and hang on for dear life. Maintaining a long and real commitment is an accomplishment within itself. Aftercare is structured to keep you focused on the things that matter in life—like your health and well-being. Overconfidence in yourself and taking aftercare with a grain of salt is one sure sign there may be a relapse at some future date. Those who take aftercare seriously have the greatest chances of a complete and lasting recovery.

2. Stay busy. The old saying that an “idle mind is the devil’s playground” rings true. When your mind is busy and filled with purpose, you can expect to be driven toward accomplishing your goals. Addicts lose touch with how to spend their time beyond abusing drugs or alcohol. Make new friends, and find new things to do and experience. Consider your employment. What can you do to enhance your career, or make positive career changes?

3. Take good care of your health. There are a host of things that can trigger a craving. Stay mentally healthy as well. Eat as healthy as possible, and make sure that you get at least six hours of sleep at night.

4. Follow relapse prevention training. You will have learned a great deal during rehab, and there are coping tools and skills that you can leverage throughout life. You will also have learned in rehab to identify and avoid those triggers that can take you back down the road to relapse. Relapse awareness is a key component in getting and staying sober.

5. If you relapse, pick yourself up and get back in the saddle again. There is no need to venture back into a full-blown state of substance abuse. Staying sober is going to be a life-long commitment. If you are willing to make the sacrifice, good things are sure to follow. Do not succumb to negative feelings of regret.

6. Stay close to your family. Rehab brings families together through counseling. Family members are able to work out their differences in a safe, protected environment. Both the addict and their family benefit tremendously. Your family can be a great source of support if you feel yourself slipping back down a dark path.

At the first sign of substance abuse, even before addiction, get the help that you or a loved one needs to live a life of sobriety.
